Ofelia Vega Tinoco

It is with deep sadness that we say our final goodbye to our loving mother and grandmother Ofelia Vega Tinoco, also known to her family as Ñañis.
Ofelia lived a long life filled with challenges and adventures that took her from her native Andean region of Peru all the way to a bustling New York City. Her unwavering faith in God, was contagious. Her firm belief that God would see her through any difficulties, was something we inherit from her and will be carried on through future family generations
She was born in Tarma, in the province of Junin in Peru in 1931. She was indigenous and spoke Quechua. Without any formal schooling, she taught herself to read and write in Spanish because she wanted to read Scriptures and learn to pray. This strong desire to be close to God, to love Him and know Him is one of the first things she taught her family. Our loving Ñañis didn’t just feed us meals; she also fed our hunger for Christ.
Ofelia was a devout Catholic and had an unbridled love for God. As a young woman she was consecrated to our Lady of Mount Carmel. Her love for our Blessed Mother was reflected in the rosary beads, medals, and scapulars she seemed to always have readily available. Everything for her was “Papa Lindo” or “Mama Linda”, a simple way to refer to our Loving Father and Loving Blessed Mother.
She was a loving mother to daughters, Florencia, Soledad, Lourdes and Alida, her youngest having preceded her in death. She is loved by eight grandchildren, whom she cared for as infants, and a few into adulthood. Her beautiful sweet motherly heart never ceased to see her grandchildren as her own children. This gentle love extended to her great grandchildren, also numbering in eight, and the family doggies she loved, especially Tigre and Max.
Ofelia was always busy working with her hands. In the various jobs she held to feed her children as a single mom, and as nurturing grandma working at home, she exemplified the very best work ethics. She was extremely resourceful, hardworking, creative, and loved without limits. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her family.
Ñañis with broken hearts and teary faces, we let you go into the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father, in unity with His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, our Blessed Mother, the angels and saints, welcome you to eternal peace. We love you and miss you so very much Ñañis. You are now with Papa Lindo and Mama Linda.
